Long Beach to Newport Beach

Gliding out of the harbor we passed by the Queen Mary.

We saw several pods of dolphins and sea lions while sailing. Near the beach, we stopped the boat for a swim hoping they would swim with us. The boat tried to sail away before Tim could get back aboard. Yes, it might have been planned, but he was a fast swimmer.

Then it was time for the actual test. No problem!

Two Harbors to Long beach

Smooth sailing on the way to Long Beach found some of the crew relaxing on deck.

Tied to the dock, we could see the lighthouse, the Aquarium, and a dome. I don't know what it is.

Dinner at the Yardhouse and browsing the Pirate's Cove. Willie Nelson playing over the cockpit speakers.

Avalon to Two Harbors
14nm

Arriving in Two Harbors, I had my first opportunity at the helm to pick up a mooring ball. It went surprisingly well. First order of business...dive into the clear blue water! A little beach volleyball, another swim, ice cream and a hike to the other side all made for one of the best beach days imaginable!

Tim takes a turn at the wheel. Its an awesome feeling to be at sea again! My favorite spot is on the bow pulpit, but of course I am here to learn as much as I can.

January brings great energy, color, and cullinary delights to the class.

And Mike balances out our awesome crew with great dive trip stories.

After a quick 25 mile sail, we pick up a mooring ball and inflate the dinghy. At least the phone didn't get wet!

Dinner at Bluewater Avalon on the patio, I tried buffalo milk, and then we stumbled upon a really cool guitarist at Luau larry's.

We probably stayed longer than planned. It was a slow start the next morning.

Sailing Lessons

Jellybean's Log
January - June 2014.

On January 11-12, 2014 Shorty and I took the ASA Basic Keelboat class on Lake Pleasant, where I met Ernie. Since then, we have been practicing every Wesnesday till Ernie returned to Canada. Then Sammi came aboard every Wednesday and Jim, another Canadian, helped me with sail trim and some singlehanding techniques. Doug, Lou, Helen, Carolyn, and Pat from the Lake Pleasant Sailing Club all logged time on the boat as well. I counted over 34 days in four months out on the lake. My neice came out for an overnight and my nephew for a day. Even Diane from California spent a night anchored out with Burros braying. Who would have thought sailing in Arizona would be so much fun!

Every month, the club had a raft up and i went to them all! They were so much fun.

So now to get my 103 and 104 classes, I am heading to Newport beach next week. I will be back at sea! And after that, Jim has invited me to sail on his boat Wind Maiden in Canada for a couple weeks

Desert Sailor

So I spent the first part of 2014 sailing on Lake Pleasant on a 26' Laguna.

Even entered the Transloch Race sponsored by the Arizona Yacht Club placing 3rd. My crew deserves most of the credit! Shorty was the snacktition, Jim Lee, the safety officer, and Todd Kapp, the tactitian, though we argued a lot about that. OK so we had a lot of fun and had to repair the genoa twice! Thanks to Lou Lefebvre for sacrificing a thumb to sew it back together. Then we replaced it with a new sail! Wow, what a difference! Had fun getting the halyard down when the old sail blew out. Fished it down with a treble hook on a boat hook and lots of guide lines.

And then finally pulled it out of the lake for the summer.
